Cerner, a healthcare IT company headquartered in North Kansas City, Missouri, incorporates innovation into the very fabric of its employee experience by merging the power of infrastructure with a philosophy of total employee happiness.

Our case study on Cerner’s new Innovations Campus tells the story of how the company fosters healthcare innovation throughout the company. In addition, the case study provides insights into ways other forward-thinking organizations can:

Cerner set out to develop an infrastructure that was different from a traditional, hierarchical office space. For example, at its new Innovations Campus, associates spend time across a range of different physical locations, from libraries to game rooms to solitary work pods to small collaboration spaces.

The areas in Cerner’s Innovations Campus foster collaboration across workforce communities. For example, a series of stairwells throughout the two structures enable employees to quickly move through the buildings. Called neighborhood nodes, these stairways also serve as community spaces where developers can meet each other and share ideas. A “Collaboratorium” features stadium seating for formal meetings, company presentations, or even informal employee gatherings.

In the context of talent recruitment and retention, an HR business partner at Cerner told us about working in North Kansas City, saying, “We don’t have mountains and oceans like some places do. So, it is really important to leverage what we do have, and that is our culture and what we do with our space.”

Cerner’s COO stated that the company is innovating and working to push healthcare technology beyond its competitors. “This challenges the company to bring in the talent that has a level of creativity that can continue to push Cerner forward,” added the COO.
